Dr Arnold Deering specialises in General (Internal) Medicine, Stroke Medicine and Syncope. He was appointed Consultant Physician in 1991.
He has wide experience in the diagnosis and management of autonomic dysfunction (dysautonomia) including Autonomic Mediated Syncope – also known as Neurocardiogenic Syncope / Vasovagal Syncope – and Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (PoTS).
Dr Deering established the Cheltenham Syncope Service, a part of Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, in 1992. This service specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of unexplained Transient Loss of Consciousness (TLoC). It was one of the first of its kind in the UK and is widely used by local GPs, Consultant Cardiologists, and Consultant Neurologists. A wide variety of patients are referred to the Syncope Clinic including those suffering from Blackouts, Faints, Postural hypotension, Orthostatic hypotension, Postural tachycardia syndrome (Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, PoTS), Dizziness, Vertigo and Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo ( BPPV)
Tilt table testing (Head up tilting, HUT) is an invaluable test used to investigate all types of dysautonomia and is provided by the Syncope Service.
Dr Deering also established the Cheltenham Stroke service in 1992. In 2012 the Syncope service and Stroke service relocated to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital as part of a centralisation of services programme championed by the Trust. Close liaison between Consultant Stroke Physicians, Consultant Vascular Surgeons and Consultant Radiologists the Stroke Service has enabled the provision of daily one-stop Transient Ischaemic Attack TIA / Minor Stroke clinics, a perfect example of interdisciplinary cooperation.
Dr Deering was educated at Portora Royal School Enniskillen, and The Queen’s University of Belfast. His specialist medical training was at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.
He is an international examiner for the Royal College of Physicians.

Recent Testimonials
“Dr Deering is a friendly and plain speaking Consultant. At this point in my recovery I have been under the care of other clinicians and greatly appreciate his honesty and direct approach. Previous vagueness and sympathy from others has been superseded by a management of my expectations, delivered in a sensitive manner. Each consultation has been followed up within a timely manner with further clinic appointments in writing.”
“Dr Deering diagnosed me with POTS after I had been ill for 20 years. Suffering with chronic fatigue and racing pulse for all that time. He was extremely professional and compassionate – a very good listener. We had to try several different treatment regimes before getting me stabilized but I now feel great. It’s like being twenty years younger. My head is clear, my energy is great. “
“Dr Deering has diagnosed and treated a condition that has caused me many problems for a long time. His kind and caring approach has been of great benefit to me. His patience and willingness to provide the best treatment has far exceeded my expectations. It’s always been possible to contact him easily whilst having my medication doses adjusted. This has made for a quick and effective improvement in my condition. I couldn’t have asked for better treatment.”
“My teenage daughter had been unwell for some time and was diagnosed with POTS. I asked for a referral to Dr Deering because he is listed as having a specialist expertise in POTS by POTS UK. Over the last 3 years he has treated her – always with great care and positivity. Due to his interventions she made steady progress and has now been symptom-free for nearly 2 years. I would recommend Dr Deering without any hesitation.”
“Dr Deering has been brilliant. Regular checks on how I’m doing have been used to make tweaks to the medication timing and this has resulted in a huge improvement in my health and my ability to live a more normal life. I cannot thank him enough for his care which is always accompanied by a smile and a joke. I am pleased to have the opportunity to leave some feed back on someone who has been able to make such a difference to me and my life.”
“Dr Deering is thorough in his examination but without having to put patients through excessive and unnecessary tests because he is confident in his diagnosis once it is made. He has a great bedside manner, a perfect combination of professional, warm, friendly, caring and funny and he speaks to patients in a language they can understand, without using lots of medical jargon. He epitomises everything you would want in a physician.”
“I have confidence that my condition was thoroughly investigated and appropriate treatment recommended, all the more because Dr Deering took considerable time and trouble to explain the condition and tests in detail, in terms I could understand, with humanity and understanding. This ethos permeates Dr Deering’s department; I felt to be in skilled and kindly hands throughout the investigations.”
“I have been with Arnold Deering for my rare syndrome called POTS. He has been amazing. He listens to everything I say and takes it all on board. He has been really encouraging and tells me what I can do myself to try and get better that bit quicker. Appointments come through practically straight away after appointments. He is really enthusiastic and is genuinely happy with any progress made. He has just generally been really good and I couldn’t have wished for a better specialist.”
“I was listened to not just about my problem but how my husband’s illness was affecting my well being. It was a totally holistic approach looking at all aspects of my life and factors that may play a part in my well being. This is an annual visit that gives me confidence that all is well with my BP and that I am not running an increased risk of another stroke.”
“I was treated as an outpatient at Gloucestershire Royal, I had been treated by Dr Deering before and requested to see him again. The diagnoses, treatment and aftercare were faultless. Dr Deering listened to me and gave me confidence in the treatment of my condition. He greets you, puts you at ease and explains the diagnoses. The treatment of the condition was explained to me in a way I could fully understand.”
